Washington, Nov 6 - Iowa Congressman Tom Latham leads a discussion on the wide range of resource available at the Library of Congress during the latest episode of the Congressional Report, Latham’s monthly television show that airs throughout Iowa and is available online.

Elizabeth Ridgway, director of educational outreach for the Library of Congress, joined Latham to discuss the how teachers and students can utilize Library of Congress materials in the classroom.  The informative episode also features a discussion on some of the more surprising items in the library’s vast collections.

“Although the library is the research arm of the U.S. Congress, you don’t have to be on Capitol Hill to benefit from its wealth of information,” Congressman Latham said during the program. “The Library of Congress conducts outreach programs to help citizens, teachers and students take advantage of its vast collections.”

Ridgway said outreach to teachers and providing students with classroom materials fits with the library’s mission to provide the country with an expansive source of information.

“The library’s mission is to provide its resources to the Congress and to the American people and to sustain and preserve a universal body of knowledge and creativity for the American people,” she said.

Teachers interested in implementing lesson plans and educational opportunities from the Library of Congress in the classroom should visit http://www.loc.gov/teachers/.

The “Congressional Report” airs statewide in Iowa on Mediacom Channel 22 on Wednesdays at 4 p.m. and on Sundays at 10:30 a.m. Episodes of the television show are also available on Congressman Latham’s Web site, and on his YouTube channel, www.youtube.com/user/CongressmanTomLatham.
