Iowa Congressman Tom Latham defended Medicare from massive funding cuts as a result of some proposed health care reform measures during a speech in the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday.
Current proposals in Congress pay for an overhaul of American health care by slashing as much as $500 billion from Medicare over the next decade.
“The plan should not be financed by raiding the Medicare program and shifting the costs onto the backs of our seniors,” Congressman Latham said during his remarks. “Seniors are being asked to shoulder the burden while getting virtually none of the benefit.”
Congressman Latham’s health care solution legislation, the “Health Care Security for All Americans Act of 2009,” protects Medicare from cuts and provides coverage for annual Medicare preventative physicals for seniors. Current policy covers only the initial physical within the first six months of enrolling in Medicare.
